Performances are made OR broken before they even start! What you focus on and think about before your start can either keep you calm and enhance your confidence or do the opposite, stress you out, and set you up for failure. The MAIN purpose of a pre-performance ritual is to keep you calm by helping distract you from distractions, especially last minute negative thinking and self-doubts. These ...

Getting to a peak performance headset takes a certain kind of focus and approach. You can’t force yourself into the ZONE. You have to keep your focus on what you’re doing, relax and let the performance come to you. Very helpful information Dr. thank you very much. I wonder if you could make a video on how to bring up motivation for young athlete. I have a 11 year old son, he loves playing tennis competitively, but when coming to fitness training or practice only serving, he says it’s boring, reluctant to do them. I don’t know how to get his self motivation out of him. When talking about future goals or dreams in tennis, he doesn’t want to talk about it either.

    Hello Alan. I am a professional snooker coach, snooker is similar to Billiards. I have a question please, you mention concentrating on the now and the action. In regards to this is what your saying meaning on how you approach the shot and the technique itself or only the shot itself and allowing the subconscious part of the brain to take care of the mechanics? I have always believed in being aware of how im doing the action to help control the mind to stay focused

    this is very good. I made the same observations about myself, but I think that this "focus on others/easy intimidation" stem from deep lying insecurities in your own person. once that insecurity is dealt with, your performance will massively increase, no matter what its about. at least that's my experience.

    I've only had a few such parental complaints. Each time, I've given the player the opportunities to show me I'm wrong. One quit despite my efforts to encourage the player to keep playing. One went to other teams only to have the parents kicked out by the league. So, it's not always the coaches. One approach I take, especially after a complaint, is to let the player prove it and repeatedly. Of course, you don't want to discourage the good kids whose parent is out of line but sometimes you just need to give them the opportunity to learn. I'll record the opportunities as well on a go pro and follow up with the parent and player post game and the parents are more subdued.

    Every parent should coach two seasons.

  • @MyMW3Channel
    @MyMW3Channel 5 місяців тому

    It is not uncommon that parents in this situation do not want to hear that their player struggles with general awareness and focus without even addressing athleticism and skills. For example, the player repeatedly has trouble knowing he's being called to go onto the field, trouble getting into position regulary, or just difficulty being ready and aware a game is happening from play to play season after season. Moreover, when offered courses of action to develop the sport's skills, there's often an excuse. Others have reported the same experience with the player. However, especially in rec league, I'll play the eager player who is willing to listen, try, and is coachable over the star athlete who has an attitude. If a player is eager but unable to function at a fundamental level, it's much harder to do.

    All I hear is DONT CRITICIZE THE COACH. JUST SIT THERE, SHUT UP AND DEAL WITH IT. WELL GUESS WHAT? WHAT IF THE COACH IS A DUMBASS? WHAT IF THE TEAM LOSES 80%OF THE TIME BECAUSE HE BELIEVES WAY TOO MUCH IN THE WRONG GUYS? AND HE REFUSES TO CHANGE STRATEGY? AND REFUSES TO TELL THE NON-STARTERS WHY THEY AREN'T PLAYING MORE? SOMETIMES COACHES NEED TO BE CRITICIZED!!! QUIT CODDLING THEM AS FRAGILE PEOPLE WHO CANT GET THEIR FEELINGS HURT.

    The athlete will give 200% without asking instead of 110% when told if you make them believe in themself and give them motivation to do their best, for themself, for the team, for the coach. Ever had a sense of flow when playing, that you just can't do a wrong move? Well, imagine that the opposite for any and every mistake that happens, no matter how minor. Will you score after becoming afraid to make a mistake while trying? Will you surprise anyone when you're afraid of doing something out of ordinary in the fear of making a mistake? No, your creativity shuts down and all options look like possible failures instead of possible success. Of course there are people who have a spark set on fire in them when they make a mistake and you yell at them to be better, but that's some individual and very particular personalities, not a general case. Eventually the athlete will just hate the coach and the game. It's similar to starting say a martial art and the sensei thinks their role is to have fun smashing beginners and less skilled players, give them a "lesson". Or not even the sensei, the lower belts too who are higher than the beginners. It is not motivating, it is not bringing kids (or adults) to the sport, it is at worst a high injury risk, it is not teaching them anything and it is not even effective practice to the person doing the smashing. "The mutual benefit" is even in the mottos of judo, and part of that is practicing effectively despite skill difference. Even if you let the beginner have a grip or try a throw, even letting them throw if they executed the technique well, it is not ruining your practice - you can focus on techniques that you don't master yet and that you can't reasonably use against your peers because they'd catch you fumbling and penalize you. And even better, giving tips while doing it will benefit you as well, they say teaching is the fastest way to learn something well. The unfortunate thing is that in many sports the coaches aren't required to have any pedagogic education or necessarily even any coaching courses that extend beyond physical training. And they become merited if their athletes get results so they are seen as authorities. A bit similarly to how someone with great genetics, some PED use and plenty of effort becomes a successful bodybuilder, or bodybuilders coached by someone become successful, people go to ask the bodybuilder how to train and they might know nothing about training successfully for other than themself or people who could succeed with just about anything as long as they put in effort. Partially that's why many PhDs of sports science, of course initially getting the spark to study from participating, but later having a higher motivation to do well in competitive scene as well just to get some credibility from the masses to what they're trying to educate people on.
